Start / End : Pangkalan Bun / Banjarmasin

ITINERARY


DAY 01: FLIGHT JAKARTA / SEMARANG OR SURABAYA TO PANGKALAN BUN - ORANGUTAN (L, D).
Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by our local staff and take you to Kumai to board on the boat. The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 2.75m by 15m with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. Proceed to Tanjung Harapan, an ex-rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutans, 2 hours away from Kumai. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok while observe the monkeys along the riverside. Lunch and dinner provide on Klotok and overnight at klotok boat. While overnight on the boat we serve mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled "mineral" water, mosquito net, kitchen, simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar - helpful guides and boatman.


DAY 02: ORANGUTAN EXPLORATION (CAMP LEAKEY) (B, L, D).
After breakfast served at the klotok, then the journey continue to travel up river for about 1.5 hours boating to visit the feeding station to see rehabilitate orangutans are given additional foods at the second camp, Camp Pondok Tanguy. Then walk back to the Klotok and continue travel up river to a side creek to visit Camp Leakey where the older orangutans used to be reintroduced into the rain forest. At Camp Leakey you will have opportunity to trek into the rain forest with your expert guide and the forestry rangers to appreciate the flora as well as perhaps sighting wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds. Lunch and dinner provide on boat. Afternoon we will then sail back down the river to overnight at klotok boat.


DAY 03: ORANGUTAN EXPLORATION (PESALAT AREA) (B, L, D).
After breakfast then sail down to Pesalat area. This area used to be the local people occupied area, but they were moved to Tanjung Harapan on the 1980's. The forest here is the home of the re-introduced Orangutan. We can do some flat and easy trekking along the ranger trail while observing the rich diversity of flora and fauna life of Tanjung Puting National Park. The Gibbon and the long tailed maccaques can be found near the river bank. There is also some small river on the trail where we could find some water creatures. While the Orangutan usually live deep into the park. Lunch box provide under the shade of the forest. At afternoon, back to the boat and overnight at klotok boat.


DAY 04: ORANGUTAN - PANGKALAN BUN - BANJARMASIN ­- ANTASA – CABAI – PAPAGARAN (B).
After an early breakfast, sail back to Kumai and then transfer to the airport, fly to Banjarmasin at 10.00 – 12.22. Arrival at Banjarmasin, then proceed to the north to Kandangan. The road after Kandangan will be up and down and winding in the area of Meratus Mountain range until you get to Antasa village, about 4.5 hours. The road from Banjarmasin to Antasa is relatively / quite smooth. From Antasa to Cabai village, the road is still unpaved. In wet season, we may have to stop at Antasan, then continue walk from Antasan to Cabai village. Arrive at Cabai, then report to the local village chief. From Cabai, we walk through the secondary forest to Papagaran camp. On our right hand side will be the hilly area / foot of Meratus mountain range. There is also a hanging bridge crossing Papagaran river. Stay overnight at jungle camp. Today’s walk will be about 2 hours only. Papagaran has a long house where the locals still living in.

DAY 05: PAPAGARAN – CAMP KADAYANGAN (B,L,D).
Early in the morning is among the peaceful time in the jungle, birds singing, animals screaming, water flow from the nearby river is unforgettable. After breakfast, we will walk through the secondary forest for about 1 hour, then the rest is virgin rain forest. Our destination today called Kadayangan camp. Normally, if we started walking at 9 am, we will be arrive at the camp area at 4 pm. During the walk, we may have the chance to see the jungle primates, birds, many species of insects. Kadayangan lies about 1 hour from the local settlement.


DAY 06: CAMP KADAYANGAN – LANDUYAN – HARATAI (B,L,D)
If you wish to, we can have a look at the local long house at the local settlement. Many of the locals there still work in slash and burn farm land. Today we will walk from Camp Kadayangan to Haratai via Landuyan. The 1st leg of the walk, we will be passing some small settlement, about 2 hours walk till Landuyan. There are several local farm land where we could see the locals at work. Then from Landuyan, we walk through virgin forest for about 4 hours till Haratai. We may camp near the local waterfall, or stay at the communal long house of the local peoples. To stay at the long house means to have closer look at the locals. Or, if we stay at the camp, it will be very close to the waterfall, a quit noise, and adventurous night.


DAY 07: HARATAI – MELARIS – KAPAYANG (B,L,D)/
Breakfast at the camp site / local house, then walk to Melaris, about 3 or 4 hours walk via the secondary forest, hilly terrain, crossing river, and also, have a chance to meet the locals on the way. Till the moment, some of them still practice slash and burn farming, and they move from one piece of land to the other. The formerly cultivated land will gain its fertility naturally after years abandoned. From Melaris, we proceed to Kapayang, last 1.5 – 2 hours walk. There a long house at Melaris we can stay at.


DAY 08: KAPAYANG – LOKSADO - KANDANGAN - BANJARMASIN (B,L).
Walk to Loksado, about 1 hour easy walk, then wrap your camera and other valuable into a plastic bag because you will on the bamboo rafting wading through the Amandit River and having fun on the stream after the trekking. Bambo rafting trip will take about 4 hours to Bubuih Village, then you walk to Muara Kandihin to get car for Kandangan. Having lunch at local restaurant in Kandangan then return to Banjarmasin. Transfer to the airport then fly to your next destination. End of your trip.
